Overview
Two hours southeast of Split the coast gives way to the Neretva canyon and then to Mostar, where the rebuilt Stari Most arches over the green river and the old bazaar still hammers copper the way it has for centuries. Pair the old town with Kravica Waterfalls or the Blagaj monastery for the second stop, and leave the border paperwork to a driver who crosses it every week.
The route, stop by stop
Border crossing
Drive inland through the Neretva valley and across the Croatian to Bosnian border. EU citizens can use a national ID card; everyone else needs a passport.
Mostar old town
Cross Stari Most, walk the bazaar, and find a riverside table for lunch.
Second stop
Kravica Waterfalls for a nature break, or the Blagaj monastery at the source of the Buna.
Return to Split
Afternoon drive back along the same scenic canyon road.
